Greetings and Parents and Students,

Welcome to a virtual tour of Exploring Computer Science!  I am thrilled to be one of the new members of the Southland College Prep High School family this year and I look forward to an exciting year with each of you as we launch into this exploration of engaging and accessible topics around computer science.

Funded with a grant from the National Science Foundation, the course curriculum was designed to introduce students to the breadth of the field of computer science, with the goal of developing  computational practices of algorithm development, problem solving and programming within the context of problems that are relevant to the lives of today's students.  Students will also be introduced to topics such as interface design, limits of computers, and societal and ethical issues.  Exploring Computer Science teaches the creative, collaborative, interdisciplinary, and problem solving nature of computing in an inquiry based approach to teaching and learning.  Many of the activities students will engage in are project based group assignments with performance-based assessments.

Now... a little about me.  Prior to re-inventing myself as an Educator, I enjoyed a career of over 20 years with Lucent Technologies in Naperville, IL.  Since that time, I have re-invented and re-educated myself for a career in Education.  I earned my Bachelor's degree from DePaul University in Business Education and hold a Type 09 teaching license issued by the Illinois State Board of Education.  In 2005 I began substitute teaching for Chicago Public Schools and the University of Chicago Charter Schools while earning a Master's Degree in Educational Technology, and a second Master's Degree in Educational Leadership.  I have held administrative positions with Chicago Public Schools and City Colleges of Chicago, both in support of  students and faculty in the STEM disciplines.  My full-time classroom teaching experience includes one other teaching assignment at the Chicago High School for the Arts (ChiArts).  In 2015 I began studying for my Doctorate's Degree in Instructional Leadership.

Suffice to say... I am a lifelong learner!  I have set high standards for myself which carry over to the high standards and high expectations I have for all of my students.  My goal is to breathe life into our parent-student-teacher relationship by partnering with you to ensure successful outcomes for all students.  I am available to meet with parents and/or students upon request, and I look forward to the upcoming school year.
