Mr. Chandler and Mr. Czerwinski

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

Welcome to the 2018 school year and 7th/8th Grade Social Studies!  I am privileged and excited to work with your child this year. I am Mr. Chandler. This is my 11th year of teaching, and my third at Huth. I graduated from the University of Dayton (Ohio) with degrees in Secondary Education and History; and I hold endorsements in Middle School and High School History. I also graduated from Southern Utah University with a Masters in Education with an additional accreditation in Technology in the Classroom. In January, I will begin earning a second Masters in Educational Leadership. I am currently the Team Green Co-Leader.

I believe that history creates as many questions about our present world as it answers, and that understanding history gives us a responsibility to the future.  It helps root our identities into something greater than ourselves and challenges us to be better stewards of the present. My goal is to encourage your child to engage the world around them, thinking critically, while developing their own unique understanding of history and the world. I hope to instill a lifelong love of learning and independent thinking. Thank you for entrusting me with your child.

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

Welcome to the 2018/2019 school year for 7th and 8th Grade Social Studies. I am Mr. Czerwinski. I am beyond excited to start the school year with your child. I graduated from Lewis University with degrees in Social Studies and Secondary Education. I then pursued my LBS1 Special Education Endorsment from St. Francis. I then received my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction: with Endorsments in Literacy and English Language Learning. This will be my 5th year teaching, and second in the district. Last year I taught Self-Contained 4th-6th grade Special Education at Sauk Elementary School. Therefore,  I am excited to focus on my content speciality, Social Studies; while incorporating the strategies and methods I learned throughout my schooling, and experiences from last year in a self-contained setting.

I believe Social Studies is much greater than memorizing dates and facts. Social Studies allows us to utilize skills that are not only neccesary for school, but also for life. In class we will be incorporating skill based learning including engaging reading strategies, analyzing documents, utilizing problem solving skills, and critically thinking about different types of sources and biases. My goal is for our students to become critical thinkers who are informed citizens, and able to form their own opinions based on their knowledge and use of analyzing skills. We can always learn from our past; as history repeats itself and our students will receive a deep foundation of U.S. History content that is from the past, and can relate to the events occuring in our world today. Our goal is for students to make real connections with their life and apply their learning in real-life situations.

Grading Policies

Students will be assessed weekly through tests, quizzes, assignments, projects, and homework. The grade book is weighted. Homework is worth 10% of the overall grade; Tests and Quizzes worth 60%; Classwork, 15% and Projects, 15%. Student’s progress can be viewed on POWER SCHOOL.  All students work is expected on the due date for full credit. All late work will receive point deductions resulting in partial credit. All absent and make-up work must be completed and turned in within the time period equal to the number of days absent from school. Progress reports will be distributed and sent home during mid-quarter.

Power School

Power School provides instant visibility to assignments, scores, grades, comments and progress for each student. I will be using the email feature to keep you informed on assignments for a given day and/or upcoming quizzes, tests, and projects. It is imperative that parents/guardians access their account by signing up in order to receive these updates.

Classwork/Homework Policy

Classwork/Homework is a reinforcement of their instructional day. Homework is classwork that was not completed in class and is due the beginning of the next class. Any homework not completed and in the appropriate bin will be considered LATE. Students get points deducted off of their assignment for late homework. Students are expected to be responsible; therefore all students should work to complete homework and submit it on time. Completing homework assignments properly and on time will help prepare your child for future lessons and success on quizzes and tests in class.
