National Board Certification: Exceptional Needs Specialist MsEd Special Education LBS1 BS History Education BA History

Ms. Heena Alavi

Hello!  I am special education teacher and general education teacher.  My two bachelors degrees are in history and education.  I also have a masters degree in special education.  This is my 21st year in teaching and going on my 10th year at Southland College Prep.  I believe all students can achieve success at their individual level of ability and all people should be treated with dignity and respect.  Within my own career development, I have worked with severely and profoundly disabled children and adults.  While working within the Department of Corrections, I taught students with severe behavior issues as well as learning disabilities.  After teaching in a maximum security prison I moved to sunny California.  I taught at David Starr Jordan High School in Watts, in south central Los Angeles.  There I earned my National Board in teaching as an Exceptional Needs Specialist.  This certification recognizes me as a highly qualified teacher in all 50 states.

After moving back to Illinois, I started working at Southland in 2012.  While here I have served as a mentor teacher for the past four years.  I have taught all levels of English, and History as well as some math and science classes.  In 2019 I earned a second decade of my National Board Certification.  This year I am teaching 7 classes including instructional: Global Literature, World History, and US History, as well as co-taught Global Literature, African American History, and two sections of World History.
