Bienvenue au cours de franςais! This is Ms. Lowery's eighth year at Southland and twelfth year teaching. She is excited to be back with our growing program, now in its ninth year! She has a lot of great things planned and looks forward to sharing them with you this year.
To the left you will find pages with materials and expectations, online resources, and the Pledge of Allegiance and the Southland Creed translated into French (under Classroom Documents).
The French curriculum is based on the standards set forth by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language. The ACTFL standards have been aligned to Common Core skills and have been adopted as the Illinois State Standards.
Ms. Lowery's instructional philosophy is that in order to learn another language, a student must be exposed to large amounts of the new language and get accustomed to communicating in that language. As you acquire language, you become more PROFICIENT. You are able to accomplish more and more tasks, communicate about more topics, and make yourself better understood. We become more proficient in any language through communication: interpreting, expressing, and negotiating the meaning of messages in the language that we are learning. In particular, LISTENING and READING to language that you can make sense of will help you to make the biggest gains on your path to proficiency, and so that is what instruction in this course is geared toward. Proficiency will be developed in the four aspects of language learning: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will demonstrate their mastery of these aspects and participate in class in the form of individual activities, group activities, total physical response and others. *Credit for the previous description goes to Mrs. Minor.
