Degrees and Certifications:
Welcome to Illinois School! My name is Caryn Leonard and I will be your child’s Gifted English and Language Arts teacher. I am looking forward to a successful 2018-2019 school year with you and your child.
Class assignments will be given daily. Not all assignments will be finished in class and therefore students are required to take them home, complete them, and return them the next day. Students may be given additional homework Monday–Friday and those assignments are due the next school day. Please make sure to ask your child to show you their assignment notebook daily. I also send assignments and other important information via text on an app called Remind. This is a safe and private way to communicate with me on a regular basis. More information and how to activate your Remind account are attached on a separate sheet of paper. I will also discuss this form of communication during Open House on September 5. Finally, grades can be viewed weekly via Power School.
We will be continuing to follow the curriculum outlined in the Illinois State Standards. These standards involve the use of more extensive writing practice, reading of non-fiction literature, informational text, as well as all other aspects of language arts. There will be even more emphasis on making sure students comprehend what they are reading by discussing it with their peers, myself, writing summaries, and applying critical thinking techniques. Quizzes and tests will be given weekly in-order to help assess students’ progress. In addition, online homework will be given each week from Study Island, SpellingCity, and/or Flocabulary to help reinforce what we are learning each week in school. If students have difficulty accessing a computer at home, please let me know so I can make-arrangements during the school day. Finally, students will be required to read an age appropriate book of their choice as part of on-going homework throughout the school year. Students will be required to present a Book Talk on a book he/she has read and complete Accelerated Reader tests (AR) each quarter. These tests are online and can only be completed at school.
Daily, I ask that all students come prepared to class with a folder, writing utensils, loose-leaf paper, textbook, and spiral for taking notes. If they are not prepared for class each day with these materials, then they are not prepared to learn.
I believe all students can learn and I will do my best to ensure that your child learns in the most positive way so that we have a very successful year. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 708-747-0301 or email email@example.com. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
